A New View of Antarctic Melting

Jonathan Bamber of the Bristol Glaciology Center in England has led a new analysis of just how much the loss of West Antarctica’s ice could raise sea levels if the ice sheet fully disintegrated. He and his co-authors conclude in the current issue of Science that the maximum rise in seas, not including what could come from Greenland, of course, would be about 10 feet, half of the 20 feet or so that has been the rough projection for several decades. My news story on the study includes cautionary comments from some other Greenland, specialists who warn that the long-term rise in seas is less relevant than what could happen in the next 100 years. The new research was not aimed at answering the near-term question. (Here’s more on the long-term melt risk.)

Over all, there is clearly still a consensus that the prime question, how fast and far seas could rise in the next 100 years, remains laden with uncertainty. Still, there appears to be growing conviction among ice experts that a few more years of work really could clarify what’s possible, or not, on time scales relevant to today’s children and their children. Visualizing Climate Change and Its Science

There’s been a growing effort to convey the science and significance of climate change in imagery, not just words. (It’s worth testing all means of communicating on this subject, given the social science illustrating how tough it would be, with words alone, to jog the public to respond to a problem laden with some irreducible uncertainty, dispersed outcomes and a long time scale.) I was involved in an early attempt, in 1992, when I wrote the companion book to “Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast,” one of the first museum exhibitions on global warming, created by the American Museum of Natural History.

Much more is under way these days, including a new exhibition there, a spate of illustrated books and an ever-expanding array of documentaries. A recent meeting focused on creating a successor to the 1939 World’s Fair Futurama exhibition, this time envisioning a world in 2050 with sustainable energy choices.

There’s a Web site, globalwarmingart.com, devoted to aggregating and disseminating climate-related artwork and graphics. (I’m still pondering holding a contest to see who can come up with fresh ways to use graphics or animation that go beyond the “burning embers” art from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.)

In a related post, my friends over at Green Inc. caught up with Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies to discuss the book on climate that he’s created with the photographer Joshua Wolfe. Following a different path into the public arena than his boss, James E. Hansen, Dr. Schmidt has focused his outreach mainly through the popular Realclimate.org blog. Ending ‘Carbon Emissions’ (the Jargon)

In the spirit of accuracy and settling on a common lexicon for climate discourse, I’d like to propose that a certain bit of climate shorthand go away. It’s the tendency to discuss the climate issue in terms of “carbon emissions.” Just doing a Google search of blogs, I found 322,963 hits for this phrase.

Here’s the problem. First, not all carbon-containing emissions exert a heat-trapping effect on the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide, or CO, for instance, is not a significant greenhouse gas.

Second, and most important, not all greenhouse gases contain carbon! This is true even within the basket of six substances formally included under the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol (and whatever addendum to those treaties emerges in months to come). Nitrous oxide and sulfur hexafluoride contain no carbon, yet emissions — measured by estimating how much carbon dioxide would exert the same climate effect — count in countries hitting or missing targets and the like.

It’s a small point. But clarity is important in this arena, where smoke and mirrors are so abundant. Can we start talking about “greenhouse gases,” or “heat-trapping substances” if including black carbon, which of course isn’t a gas?
