Was Jack Benny Joking?

From the FT, Tim Harford explains "Why extortion is a hard game to master". It's fun to read, but one sentence about bank robbery puzzled me:

"One lesson is that bank tellers have little to lose by complying, which is why banks started introducing locks, alarms, cameras and other systems that could not be overridden by staff."

Excuse me, the truth is that they have a lot to lose by not complying. Even if it's your money, surely we can all agree that Jack Benny was joking when he paused in answering "Your money or your life?".

Or can we?
