The Bailout And Government Spending

Matt Welch raises some fair points about the Fannie/Freddie bailout, and the fact that many want to increase spending on other projects because of this. I understand the concern, but want to raise a few points.

Whatever one thinks of these various proposals mentioned in the post, if a person thinks that they are at least as important as the bailout, then it is reasonable for them to want to spend the money to implement them. Obviously there are still budget concerns, but one can see how the bailout can be seen as showing that if the government really needs to spend money, it will.

As far as the list is concerned, what strikes me as a problem is the bailout itself, which was avoidable, and the spending on the war. The other projects might not appeal to a libertarian, but a libertarian Democrat finds them more appealing than the bailout and the war.

Still, Democrats need to refrain from a spending frenzy, and proceed in a cautious manner. Democrats need to be strong on budget concerns.
