Reupublican Convention Blues Part 2

Missing in the coverage of the Republican convention was the fact that a libertarian was actually there as a candidate who actually got votes. The treatment of Ron Paul by the party signals how they feel about libertarians.

Now, I've come to feel differently about Ron Paul myself, so I don't begrudge people who've changed their minds about him. But, still, he was a member of the Republican party who got real votes. I guess the Republicans have conceded these Paulites to Rep. Barr.

McCain and Palin obviously support some libertarian positions, but neither is libertarian at bottom. I don't sense either of them stressing liberty as a theme in their campaign.

I used to be a Republican, largely because I liked John McCain and felt that the Republican party allowed more libertarian thought. That might have been the case at one time, but it is not the case now, and the trend is away from libertarian thought.

The Democratic party seems to allow the possibility of libertarian thought becoming more pronounced, if not dominant. I can understand the skepticism, especially given the choice of Joe Biden, but still see the trend moving in our direction. One party is reaching out, however imperfectly, while the other is abandoning or marginalizing libertarians as best it can. The choice is easy.
